Xanthorrhoea johnsonii, or Grass Tree, is a striking Australian native with a blackened trunk and a crown of long, grass-like leaves. It produces tall flower spikes in mature plants, attracting birds and insects. Prefers full sun to part shade and very well-drained soil. Extremely drought-tolerant once established—avoid overwatering. Plant carefully to protect roots.

Size at maturity: Up to 4 m high (including flower spike) x 1–2 m wide.
