Acanthus mollis – 14cm Pot

A hardy, evergreen, clumping perennial with dark green, leathery foliage. Acanthus mollis is a fast-growing understory plant, best used for mass plantings under taller shrubs or canopy trees. In Summer tall spirals of white flowers appear above the foliage. They look beautiful in perennial borders, cottage gardens or planted into a pot as a feature. Acanthus mollis grows best in a shaded and sheltered area. These tough perennials grow best in humus-rich soil. However, they will tolerate sandy soils if kept watered during dry, hot weather. Use a premium quality potting mix when planting them into pots. Low-moderate water requirements once established in the garden. Occasional watering during the warmer months will keep the plant lush and healthy.

Planting Tips: 

Make sure to prepare the soil before planting. Mixing in a bag of well-aged animal manure or compost can help to conditions and revitalise tired soil. Make sure to blend with the pre-existing ground, mixing thoroughly. Once the ground has been prepared, dig a hole which is wider, but not deeper, than what the original size of the pot the plant has come in. Position the plant in the hole and backfill any gaps with the excess soil. Give the plant a deep soaking of water to help settle the roots.
Planting into a pot, make sure that the container chosen is large enough for the plant selected. Never pot a plant into a container which is too small. Use a premium quality potting mix as this has all the added fertilisers and wetting agents required for having a healthy plant.
